Diabetes is a disease which occurs when your blood sugar (or blood glucose) levels are too high.

The two most common types of diabetes are: 1) type 1 diabetes in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin at all and 2) type 2 diabetes characterized by an inability of the body to use the insulin the pancreas produces.

Each year more and more people live with this condition, which can result in life changing complications. Nutrition has a vital role to play in the management of all types of diabetes, and it is recommended that a dietitian form part of the diabetic health care team for medical nutritional therapy.
